Start with the project, not the machine
Write down what will be built after the excavation. Identify the drawings available, the area of work and the person who will accept the prepared surface or cut. A machine size is a method decision that follows the site and scope.
Project checklist
Property address and reviewing authority; intended construction and available drawings; work limits and access route; utility coordination owner; material staying, leaving or arriving; testing and acceptance requirements; weather and water responsibilities; next-trade handoff.
Use the printable checklist to organize these notes. It is a preparation aid, not an authorization to dig or a site safety assessment.
Compare like scopes
Ask proposals to distinguish excavation, loading, hauling, disposal, imported material, placement, compaction and testing. Check the quantity basis and the treatment of unexpected conditions. The cost guide explains why a single headline price is not enough.
